Press Release - Berliner Selected as 'Best of Bethesda' Councilmember
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Bethesda Magazine Voters Select Roger Berliner (D-1) as ‘Best’ County Council Member in Annual Survey
Bethesda, MD (January 1, 2010) - The January/February issue of Bethesda Magazine featuring the annual “Best of Bethesda” survey highlights Roger Berliner, County Council member from District 1 (Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Potomac), as reader’s choice for ‘Best County Council Member’.
Councilmember Berliner was singled out for his top-notch constituent service and attention to the preservation of his district’s suburban communities. A 58-year-old energy and environment lawyer elected to the District 1 seat in 2006, Councilmember Berliner said that “it is particularly gratifying to be thought of as ‘the Best County Councilmember’ by such a sophisticated audience.” The article notes that Councilmember Berliner is proud of his work preserving the character of the ‘incredibly lovely suburban communities’ he represents, which includes successfully tackling reform of McMansionization, an issue that threatened the character of District 1’s older neighborhoods.
Among Berliner’s other initiatives that bear distinction include his concept of Sustainable Transportation Corridors, an idea widely praised that would take cars off Wisconsin Avenue/Rockville Pike and Connecticut Avenue and could become a prototype for the Obama Administration’s Livable Communities Program; plus passage of eight major energy/environmental initiatives that put Montgomery County at the forefront nationally of the fight against global warming.
The annual reader’s survey is conducted each September. According to the magazine there were more than 4500 respondents to this year’s poll, more than in any years past.
