Senior Citizens

District 1 has more senior citizens than any other District, and Roger has worked tirelessly on their behalf.  He took the unprecedented step of hosting three different senior forums, each with a different theme important to seniors – their financial wellbeing and personal safety, their emotional and physical wellbeing, and aging in place.  Speakers included Senator Cardin, Congressman Van Hollen, and national leaders in their respective fields.  These forums were a huge success, in part because Roger also brought service providers to the events, so that seniors could learn more about the many organizations that are available in the county to help them.

Roger has also been at the forefront of the growing “aging in place” movement, a movement that community leaders in District 1 are organizing in many neighborhoods.  He sponsored a county study on “Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities” so that our county government has a better sense of how it can help seniors stay in their homes if that is their desire.   Roger’s work in this field led one of District 1’s foremost aging in place experts, Leslie Kessler, to say this about Roger:

“No one on the County Council has been more committed to senior issues than Councilmember Berliner. He convened three senior forums, sponsored a County report on Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities, and commits his total support for helping seniors age in their homes and communities. He is a true Champion of Seniors in Montgomery County!”
